Datentypen stellen den Bauplan für Variablen dar. Alle Variablen eines Datentyps haben dieselbe Darstellung im Arbeitsspeicher, d.h. dieselbe Anzahl von Speicherzellen und dieselbe Interpretation der einzelnen Bits. Verschiedene Variablen können dabei individuelle Werte tragen.
