Abstract
In this chapter, we will explain the various causes starting with the typical symptoms that appear in application systems when there are performance problems. This explanation is followed by concrete hints as to which remedial measures can be taken to combat these problems. That favorite saying of American specialists holds true here: “It depends”. This should be understood to mean that these measures are not a cure-all, but have solved a problem in specific situations in a specific technical environment. Furthermore, remember that normally there is not just one cause for a problem, but several. The same applies to the solution of the problem. Depending on the existing technical environment, there are almost always several possible approaches.
