Abstract

Scientific research, often closely interacting with technology, is undoubtedly a major driving force in modern society. ’Strategic’ choices are on the agenda of government and industry. This strongly enhances the need for comprehensive and well-structured information on science. Indeed, we observe an increasing interest in the systematic assessment of important aspects of science (such as structure and development of scientific fields, interaction with technology, research performance, international collaboration, etc.). Economic retrenchment has led to more careful selection, within and between different fields of science. Politicians, policy-makers, and even scientists are now calling for ’accountability’ and ’value for money’, simply because funds for science have to be set against those for other societal activities, and within the science budget itself, priorities have to be established.
