Die politischen Systeme Osteuropas

Zusammenfassung

Die heutige Republik Kroatien (Republika Hrvatska) umfaßt ein Territorium, welches seit dem 7. Jahrhundert von der kroatischen Bevölkerung (in der auch die alteingesessenen römischen Bewohner weitgehend assimiliert wurden) besiedelt ist, jedoch in der Geschichte zu unterschiedlichen politischen Gemeinwesen gehörte. Für die Bildung einer ethnischen kroatischen Identität war vor allem die Existenz eines kroatischen Fürstentums seit dem 9. Jahrhundert wichtig, welches seit dem 10. Jahrhundert den Status eines Königreichs errang. Das kroatische Königreich wurde seit dem Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts durch Personalunion in das Königreich Ungarn integriert, besaß allerdings in dem weiterbestehenden kroatischen ständischen Landtag, dem kroatischen Sabor, ein Instrument eigenständiger Landesgesetzgebung1. Zu Beginn der Neuzeit wurde das kroatische Territorium unter konkurrierenden Mächten aufgeteilt: im Landesinneren eroberte das Ottomanische Reich die östlichen kroatischen Gebiete (Slawonien), während die westlichen Teile aufgrund eines entsprechenden Beschlusses des kroatischen Sabor im Jahr 1527, zusammen mit den territorialen Überresten des ungarischen Königreiches, vom Habsburger Reich übernommen wurden. Der größte Teil der kroatischen adriatischen Küste (westliches Istrien, Dalmatien) wurde von der Venezianischen Republik beherrscht, die sich auf eine Vielzahl von semiautonomen städtischen Kommunen stützte; im Norden allerdings blieb ein Küstenstreifen unter habsburgischer Herrschaft (östliches Istrien, Primorje), während im südlichen Dalmatien die Handelsstadt Dubrovnik, als aristokratische Republik verfaßt, ihre Eigenständigkeit bewahren konnte (Goldstein 1999: 40ff.).
