Abstract

By exploiting the unique features of bio-recognition systems biosensors have the potential to complement conventional analytical methods. Especially when offering new or improved capabilities over existing technologies such as the estimation of biological effects, sum-values, or the potential for analysis in complex and divers natural matrices these devices become very useful for several environmental applications. In this context immunosensors for herbicide and PAH-determination, and enzyme sensors for the determination of phosphate and phenol are presented. Moreover, microbial sensors for the estimation of biological oxygen demand and the assessment of environmental pollutants are described.
