Abstract

»Societies« have always consisted of multiple, overlapping, intersecting networks of interaction, at the boundaries of each of which occurs a certain degree of cleavage. »Societies« have never been unitary but multiply-bounded. They have never totally caged their members, but the extent to which they have caged them has varied. It is these »degrees of multiple-boundedness« that I will here discuss across recent history and across the world today.
