Abstract

The paper reviews environmental education for sustainable development initiatives in Kenya. It focuses and consequently recommends the integration of environmental action learning (EAL) into the school curricula as a strategy for sustainable development. This approach to education encourages practical learning and problem solving. It gives learners opportunities to participate actively in learning and exploring their surroundings to make wise decisions and choices about their environment. This is illustrated by the example of the Africa Eco-school Project initiated and co-ordinated by the Environmental education center Nairobi under the auspices of the Kenyan organization of Environmental Education (KOEE). The project has the National Kenyan chapter (NEAL) as well as the Eastern and Southern Africa regional chapter (REAL).
