Abstract
As this is not the right place for a comprehensive and detailed report, it is necessary to circumscribe the topic, by limiting the focus to formal education only (i.e., education in schools), although informal education is extremely important as well, and as such it should always be taken into account whenever successful development of environmental education is the aim.

Notes
„These guidelines have determined the peculiarities of environmental education at school.:— Environmental education does not only mean to develop awareness and know-how with regards to a specific environmental issue; it rather implies to foster attitudes and behaviours which are environmentally alert and sensible.— As the specific goal of education is to develop knowledge, and knowledge has to be regarded as the awareness of the surrounding reality and of the ways it is possible to modify it, as well as the consciousness of the fundamental values in life and of the ability of making alert and sensible choices, therefore it follows that school education can contribute to favour sustainable development mainly by promoting knowledge.— It is necessary to shift from the idea of nature to the idea of environment, the latter to be meant as the reality which comes out of the interaction in time and in space of complex factors (including culture) building up the structure of biosphere. As a consequence, if till a short time ago we used to talk about the protection and safeguard of nature, nowadays we are working towards a correct management of the environment, and we endeavour to combine environment with development, so as to foster sustainable development.“ (translated from C.M. 149, 1996)
