Zusammenfassung
Das Satellitensystem GPS war ursprünglich nur zur Ortung und Navigation für militärische Institutionen geschaffen worden. Aufgrund seiner hervorragenden Eigenschaften hat es im Laufe der Zeit im zivilen Bereich überall dort, wo Entfernungen und Positionen bestimmt werden müssen, eine breite Anwendung gefunden. In den folgenden Abschnitten wird ein Überblick zu den zur Zeit wesentlichsten Anwendungen gegeben. Vom Umfang aus gesehen, steht dabei das Verkehrswesen im Vordergrund, bei der Gewinnung einer neuen Qualität ist das Vermessungswesen am bedeutendsten.
