Zusammenfassung

Die menschlichen Lebensalter und deren Abfolge im Lebenslauf gewinnen auch innerhalb der Soziologie zunehmend an Interesse. Lebensalter, obgleich dem Ursprunge nach ein rein biologischer Sachverhalt, ist eine wichtige Bestimmungsgröße individuellen Handelns und damit eine der zentralen Dimensionen gesellschaftlicher Struktur. Die einzelnen Lebensalter indizieren nicht allein Stand und Ablauf körperlicher und mentaler Reifung, sie sind auch Ausdruck der Lage und Bewegung des einzelnen im Gefüge der Gesellschaft, das durch altersspezifische Verhaltenserwartungen und Handlungschancen gekennzeichnet ist. Das Handeln der Gesellschaftsmitglieder kann somit durch die jeweilige Position im Lebenslauf erklärt werden. Insbesondere werden nachhaltige lebensalter- und lebenslaufabhängige Verhaltensprägungen im Verlaufe eines lebenslangen Sozialisationsprozesses erwartet. Eine solcherart konzipierte Soziologie des Lebenslaufs thematisiert nicht einzelne, voneinander isolierte Abschnitte im Lebenslauf (wie z.B. die Jugendsoziologie); Feld der Analyse ist vielmehr die gesamte Lebensspanne (vgl. Kohli 1978;. Rosenmayr 1978).
