Zusammenfassung
Die Diskussion um die Globalisierung der Kultur ist durch zwei Ereignisse wieder in den Vordergrund der öffentlichen Diskussion gelangt. Zum einen drohte im Herbst 1993 die Gefahr, daß der Streit zwischen den USA und Frankreich um die Behandlung der audiovisuellen Medien im Rahmen des GATT den Abschluß der Verhandlungen zum Scheitern brachte. Frankreich war nicht bereit, seine audiovisuelle Kultur wie normale Waren behandeln zu lassen. Es gab und gibt seitdem in Frankreich massive Bemühungen, die kulturelle Identität wahren zu wollen. Das zweite Ereignis, das im vorliegenden Kontext von Bedeutung ist, war die Unterzeichnung des Telecommunications Reform Act durch Präsident Clinton im Februar 1996. Durch diesen neuen gesetzlichen Rahmen wurde die vertikale Integration von Medienunternehmen möglich. In der Folge kam es zu einer Welle von Fusionen und es entstanden weltweit agierende Medienunternehmen von bis dahin unbekannter Größe wie z.B. Time Warner-CNN oder Walt Disney-ABC Cap. Cities.
