Zusammenfassung
Ende Februar 2002 erregte die Nachricht über den Tod des Rebellen-Führers Jonas Savimbi weltweites Aufsehen. Seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre führte Sa-vimbi die Uniäo Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) zunächst im Dekolonisationskrieg gegen die Kolonialmacht Portugal und seit 1975 im Antiregimekrieg gegen die von der Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) gestellte Regierung an. Einst zum Hoffnungsträger der antikommunistischen Strategie der USA in Angola gekürt, gleichzeitig aber von der Anti-Apartheid-Bewegung aufgrund seiner Zusammenarbeit mit Südafrika als Verräter beschimpft, war Savimbi im Kontext des afrikanischen Kriegsgeschehens nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg eine Legende. Trotz mehrerer Friedensabkommen kam es unter Savimbis Herrschaft in der UNITA nie zu einer endgültigen Niederlegung der Waffen. Die mit seinem Tod verbundene Hoffnung auf Frieden erfüllte sich durch ein Friedensabkommen, das Vertreter der UNITA und der Regierung am 4. April 2002 vereinbarten. Seit Juni 2002 waren zwischen UNITA- und Regierungstruppen keine Kämpfe mehr zu verzeichnen, so dass der Krieg seitdem als beendet angesehen werden kann.
