Zusammenfassung

Nachdem vor 20 Jahren der erste klinische Fall einer AIDS-Erkrankung auftrat, nimmt das acquired immunodeficiency syndrome gegenwärtig Rang vier bei den menschlichen Todesursachen ein. Schätzungen zu Folge sind bis dato mehr als 22 Millionen Menschen an AIDS gestorben.2 Ende 2001 lebten circa 40 Millionen Menschen mit dem HI-Virus oder waren an dem Immunschwä che-Syndrom erkrankt — rund 1,4 Millionen von diesen waren Kinder unter 15 Jahren (UNAIDS 2001, UNICEF 2000).
