Zusammenfassung
Gegenwärtig in der Praxis anzutreffende Rechnernetze sind durchweg hersteiler- und/oder anwendungsspezifische Netze. Dieser Zustand wird sich wahrscheinlich ungeachtet der großen Bedeutung der offenen Rechnernetze und der Bemühungen der diese fördernden Standardisierungs- und anderen Organisationen nur allmählich ändern. Dabei ist es letztenendes unerheblich, ob sich der Migrationsprozeß von geschlossenen zu offenen Rechnernetzen durch den schrittweisen radikalen Ersatz traditioneller Rechnernetzkonzepte und der sie realisierenden Hard- und Softwarekomponenten durch die OSI-Architektur und darauf aufbauende Netzkomponenten oder durch einen inkrementellen Übergang im Rahmen bestehender Netze vollziehen wird. Im gegebenen Zusammenhang von Bedeutung ist, daß noch für einen unabsehbar langen Zeitraum eine Koexistenz verschiedener geschlossener mit immer ausgedehnteren offenen Rechnernetzen zu beobachten sein wird. Daraus leitet sich die Notwendigkeit ab, das Netzmanagement derartiger komplexer Kommunikationsinfrastrukturen zu beherrschen.
