Elemente von Netzwerken können aktiv oder passiv sein, passiv sind z.B. die Leitungen. Aktive Elemente zeichnen sich dadurch aus, daß sie Daten speichern und verändern, Signale verstärken oder verändern, z.B. modulieren können. In diesem Kapitel werden nur aktive Elemente betrachtet.
