Zusammenfassung
Das on-line analytic processing (OLAP) ist im Gegensatz zu OLTP (on-line transaction processing) weniger durch Routineabfragen auf Mikrodaten, als durch thematisch bezogene Einzelabfragen von Mikrodaten und durch Ad-hoc-Abfragen von gruppierten und aggregierten Daten (Makrodaten) charakterisiert, wie sie beispielsweise für die Analyse von Absatzdaten im Marketing typisch sind. Die dafür benötigte abstrakte Datenstruktur ‚data cube‘ oder ‚multi-dimensionale Tabelle‘ wird beschrieben und auf Regeln fir die sichere Anwendung der zugehörigen Operatoren verwiesen.
Während in der Unternehmenswelt sich der Begriff ‚OLAP‘ eingebürgert hat, bevorzugt man in statistischen Institutionen wie statistischen Landesämtern, statistischem Bundesamt oder EuroStat — dem statistischen Amt der europäischen Union — den Begriff ‚Statistisches Datenbanksystem‘ oder ‚Statistisches Informationssystem‘. In beiden Fällen steht das Attribut ‚statistisch‘ für gruppierte und summierte (aggregierte) Daten. Beide Ansätze lassen sich daher, wie im folgenden geschehen, einheitlich beschreiben.
