Zusammenfassung
Sowohl das Hauptgruppenelement Magnesium als auch das Übergangsmetall Mangan (Wieghardt 1989) besitzen neben ihren Funktionen im Bereich der Photosynthese große Bedeutung als Zentren hydrolysierender und Phosphat-übertragender Enzyme (s. Kap. 14.1). Darüber hinaus spielt Mangan in seinen höheren Oxidationsstufen (+III, +IV) eine Rolle als Redoxzentrum (Pecoraro) in einigen Ribonukleotid-Reduktasen (vgl. Kap. 7.6.1), Katalasen und Peroxidasen (s. Kap. 6.3) sowie Superoxid-Dismutasen, letztere insbesondere in Mitochondrien (Borgstahl et al.; vgl. Kap. 10.5). Obwohl im photosynthetischen Gesamtprozeß auch Eisen- und Kupfer-Zentren wesentlich am Elektronentransfer innerhalb der Membranproteine beteiligt sind, beschränkt sich dieses, der für Lebewesen wohl wichtigsten chemischen Reaktion gewidmete Kapitel, auf zwei grundlegende Teilbereiche der Photosynthese: die Aufnahme von Licht und die damit bewerkstelligte Ladungstrennung durch magnesiumhaltige Chlorophylle sowie die Mangan-katalysierte Oxidation von Wasser zu Sauerstoff bei Cyanobakterien, Algen und den höheren Pflanzen.
