Religion und Politik in der Türkei: Säkularistische Theokratie oder kemalistisches Panopticon?

Zusammenfassung

„Sind Sie ein Säkularist?“ Zugegebenermaßen war ich zunächst um eine Antwort verlegen, als ich im September 1997 zum ersten Mal mit dieser Frage konfrontiert wurde.1 Selbstverständlich waren mir Säkularisierung, Säkularisation und Säkularismus geläufige Begriffe, allerdings standen sie für historische Gegenstände, zu denen sich zu bekennen mir fremd war. Für den türkischen Studenten hingegen, der damals diese Frage an mich gerichtet hatte, war dieses Bekenntnis zum Säkularismus von höchster Bedeutung. Sollte meine Antwort ihm doch die Möglichkeit geben, mich in das aktuell vorherrschende politische Koordinatensystem der Türkei einzuordnen. Dieses war zumindest seit dem Wahlsieg der islamistischen Wohlfahrtspartei (RP), die nach den Wahlen im Dezember 1995 mit 21,4 Prozent der Stimmen die stärkste Fraktion im türkischen Parlament stellte, entlang der Konfrontationslinie zwischen Säkularisten und Islamisten2 strukturiert.
