Die Anwendung der Chaostheorie bei der Untersuchung psychischer Störungen geht mit einem Paradigmenwechsel in Psychologie und Psychiatrie einher. Die neue Perspektive konmit grundlegenden Erkenntnis-„Bedürfnissen“entgegen, nämlich nach

1.)
einem quantitativen Verständnis schöpferischer Aspekte der Natur (hier redet der Chaostheoretiker von „dynamischer Selbstorganisation“);

2.)
gesicherter Erkenntnis mit gleichzeitigen Freiräumen für die Phantasie (hier spricht der Chaostheoretiker von einer inhärenten Erkennbarkeit ohne langfristige Vorhersagbarkeit der Strukturen des „deterministischen Chaos“);

3.)
objektiver Erfassung eigentümlicher und einmaliger Entwicklungen (hier wird von „schwacher Kausalität“oder vom „Schmetterlingsefifekt“gesprochen);

Einsicht in die dreiheitliche Rekursivität des dynamischen Geschehens (enthalten im „Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem“für kontinuierliche Systeme oder in der „Period Three Implies Chaos“-Erkenntnis für diskrete Systeme, Li & Yorke, 1975);
