Die „Afrikanische Union“ — Afrikas neuer Anlauf zu kontinentaler Einheit und globaler Anerkennung

Zusammenfassung

Am 9./10.7.2002 wurde die erste Gipfelkonferenz der Staats- und Regierungsoberhäupter der Afrikanischen Union (AU) in der südafrikanischen Hafenstadt Durban abgehalten. Einen Tag zuvor hatte die 38. und letzte Gipfelkonferenz der 1963 gegründeten Organisation der Afrikanischen Einheit (OAU) stattgefunden. Afrika trat damit in eine neue Phase seiner Suche nach Einheit ein, in einer Zeit, in der der Kontinent durch anhaltende Entwicklungs-und Sicherheitsprobleme weltweit immer mehr ins Hintertreffen zu geraten scheint.

Time has cone that Africa must take her rightful place in global affairs. Time has come to end the marginalisation of Africa. We call on the rest of the world to work with us as partners.“
