Zusammenfassung
Multinationalen Unternehmen (MNUs) gilt seit langem die Sorge und das besondere Interesse der Regierungen im jeweiligen Stamm- oder Gastgeberland. Ausländische Unternehmen stellten schon immer eine gewisse Spannungsquelle dar, und ausländische Investitionen sind in fast allen Ländern reglementiert und der Kontrolle unterworfen. Darüber hinaus besitzt der Staat seit langem das Vorrecht, die nationale Handelspolitik zu steuern. Die Debatten zwischen den Verfechtern des Freihandels, des Merkantilismus und des Protektionismus nehmen daher in der wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen Fachliteratur breiten Raum ein.
Der Autor dankt den Professoren Edith Penrose und José de la Torre, beide INSEAD, sowie den Teilnehmern der Harward Business School Colloquiums über Wettbewerb auf globalen Märkten, für ihre Kommentare und Kritik an früheren Fassungen dieses Beitrages.
