Mitte der vierziger Jahre schrieb Wald ([147] – [152]) seine bahnbrechenden Arbeiten über Sequentielle Analysis und Statistische Entscheidungstheorie. Der Wald’sche SPRT (sequential probability ratio test) zeigt, wie man gegenüber Tests mit festem Stichprobenumfang Kosten sparen kann. Die Statistische Entscheidungstheorie gab eine einheitliche Sprechweise für statistische Fragen, wie man sie bis dahin nicht gekannt hat.
