Die Menge ℂ der komplexen Zahlen lässt sich als Erweiterung der Menge ℝ der reellen Zahlen betrachten. So hat die Gleichung z2+1 = 0 für z ∈ ℂ eine (komplexe) Lösung, während die Gleichung z2 + 1 = 0 für z ∈ ℝ keine (reelle) Lösung hat.
