Abstract

The objective of the experiments was to study the behaviour of different sugars and other C compounds, which were identified in root exudates, in soil and to elucidate the phosphate-dissolving effect of these substances under sterile and unsterile conditions. For this purpose, the behaviour of water soluble citric acid, malic acid, glutaric acid and D-glucose was analysed in small blocks (10 × 20 × 20 mm). Under sterile conditions, the substances being trickled on the block frontage showed no differences to the dissolved phosphate. Distinct differences between the substances were observed in the sterile variants. In comparison to this, the greatest effect on the dissolved phosphate showed water soluble citric acid. The experiment suggest that the P-dissolving effect of the investigated substances seems to be caused mainly by their microbial metabolites.
