Abstract

For sufficiently low frequencies of sound appreciable amounts of water vapor can condense on clouds or drops of mist. This leads to dispersion and absorption phenomena. While the region of dispersion is below the region of human audibility the domain of absorption for clouds with a high water content consisting of small droplets extends into the region of low audible tones. This is one of the causes of the wellknown strong absorption of thunder.

Translated by M. Horvat from K. Oswatitsch, „Die Dispersion und Absorption des Schalles in Wolken“, Physik. Zeitschr., 42 (1941), 365–378.
