Abstract
This paper develops a model to predict the appearance of specific R&D units in international locations. Grounding on information processing theory, the model evaluates the local supply of technological information and demand for R&D information processing using fuzzy logic in order to determine the appropriate type of R&D unit.
The model is tested with data from German and Swiss MNCs. After further refinement and validation, R&D managers may use the model to analyze and optimize their international R&D organizations.
