Moderne Datenbanksysteme basieren auf dem relationalen Modell. Dieses Modell wurde in Abschnitt 3.4 und in Kapitel 4 ausführlich behandelt. Das Relationenmodell baut auf einer exakten sauberen mathematischen Grundlage auf und besitzt mit SQL eine mächtige Abfragesprache. Relationen oder Tabellen dieses Datenbankmodells bestehen aus Tupeln, die ihrerseits aus Attributen aufgebaut sind.
