Abstract

The attempts of typologists aimed at determining a relationship between affix order and main clause constituent order have by and large been unsuccessful. As far as verbal affixes are concerned, the only significant correspondence that has been established is between basic SOV order and tense suffixes as opposed to tense prefixes. However, recently a significant correlation between affix order and main clause constituent order has been postlated within the context of the Principles and Parameters approach, namely by Ouhalla (1991). Ouhalla claims that the ordering of two verbal affixes, i.e Sagr and tense is a major typological parameter which among other things determines the surface order of the subject and verb.
