Zusammenfassung
Start-up-Inkubatoren (kurz Inkubatoren) helfen neu gegründeten Unternehmen, die schwierigen Anfangsphasen zu überstehen. Noch 1980 existierten nur eine Handvoll Inkubatoren weltweit. Um das Jahr 2000 gab es mehr als 1100, die Hälfte davon in den Vereinigten Staaten. Auch in Europa hat die Idee Fuß gefasst; mehrere hundert Inkubatoren wurden allein in den letzten Jahren hier gegründet. Bis 2001 fiel der Löwenanteil im Internet-Sektor an; diese Industrie war durch relativ niedrige Eintrittsbarrieren und leichten Risikokapitalzugang gekennzeichnet. Das hieß jedoch nicht, dass die Umsetzung einer Geschäftsidee im Internet einfach ist: Die Chancen, dass eine High-Tech-Idee in ein eigenständiges, an der Börse notiertes Unternehmen umgesetzt wird, stehen bei sechs zu einer Million (Nesheim 2000, S. 1).
