Zusammenfassung
Das Kapitel enthält eine grundlegende Einführung in die Kultivierungsperspektive, ausgehend von einer historischen und aktuellen, differenziert-kritischen Bewertung des Fernsehens als zentralem Medium des Erzählen massenproduzierter Geschichten. Kultivierung beschreibt die unabhängigen Beiträge, die das Fernsehverhalten zu den Konzeptionen des Zuschauers von der sozialen Realität leistet. Wirken sie sich als kontinuierliches Eintrichtern meinungsführender Orientierungen aus, bezeichnet man diesen Prozess scheinbarer Konvergenz von Perspektiven und Erwartungen als „Mainstreaming“. Das Fernsehen als zentraler Faktor in unserer symbolischen Umwelt wird dabei als eigenständige und dominante kulturelle Kraft verstanden, deren Interaktionsdynamik es zu entschlüsseln gilt, um Abhängigkeiten einzuschränken und auch künftig eine selbstbestimmte Nutzung zu gewährleisten. Der Forschungsansatz des berühmten „Cultural Indicators Project“, bestehend aus institutioneller Prozessanalyse, Systemanalyse der Botschaften und seinem Kernstück, der Kultivierungsanalyse, wird zunächst rekapituliert. Anschließend wird der Weg der Kultivierungsperspektive von frühen Kultivierungsd fferentialen bis hin zu Untersuchungen im Rahmen des Mainstreaming-Konzepts erläutert, wobei Forschungsergebnisse zu zentralen Themen der Kultivierungsforschung wie der Gewaltproblematik, Geschlechtsrollenstereotypien, politische Orientierungen, sozialen Stereotypien etc. jeweils kurz skizziert werden. Ein Überblick über die Ergebnisse der internationalen Kultivierungsforschung schließlich dokumentiert Kultivierungseffekte in einer Vielfalt nationaler Kontexte auf allen fünf Kontinenten und bekräftigt die Bedeutung der Theorie.
