Zusammenfassung
Im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert machte die wirtschaftliche und soziale Entwicklung in vielen Ländern der Erde bedeutende Fortschritte. Die durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung stieg beträchtlich an, Gesundheitswesen und Hygiene wurden weltweit verbessert und die Anzahl der Länder, die in der Lage sind, den täglichen Pro-Kopf-Kalorienbedarf zu decken, verdoppelte sich von ungefähr 25 auf 50. Besonders beeindruckend waren die Raten der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung in Süd- und Ostasien, wo der Anstieg des BSP in den 80er Jahren im Durchschnitt bei über sieben Prozent lag. Es bleibt jedoch noch viel zu tun: Ungefähr 800 Millionen Menschen haben noch nicht genug zu essen, eine Milliarde Menschen — ungefähr 35 Prozent der erwachsenen Bevölkerung der Erde — sind noch immer Analphabeten, 1,3 Milliarden Menschen leben in absoluter Armut, und die Geschwindigkeit der Waldzerstörung entspricht ungefähr einem Fußballfeld pro Sekunde. Per definitionem sind die schlechten Nachrichten in den armen Ländern am deutlichsten. Der Weltbank (1993) folgend wird ein armes oder einkommensschwaches Land hier definiert als ein Land mit einem pro-Kopf-BSP von US$ 635 oder weniger im Jahr 1991. In vielen dieser Länder wurde, trotz beträchtlicher Anstrengungen seitens der Regierungen und der Geber, relativ wenig erreicht (Summers 1992).
