Abstract

Leptons produced in hadron-hadron collisions close to the hadronic vertex are called direct or prompt. The leptons from Dalitz decays or strange particle decays are normally excluded and treated as background. The well known sources of direct leptons, namely electromagnetic decays of vector mesons, are most probably not sufficient to explain the observed lepton yield. This suggests the existence of new, up to now not identified production mechanisms.
