Summary
This lecture will show how the product development in the area of realtime will be more effective on the base of the standardized specification language SDL (specification and description language) connected with an optimized Codegeneration.
Because of the standardized language SDL it is meanwhile possible (on the basis of the good tool support) to specificate and simulate complex systems in a graphic way. From this graphic specifications optimized C Code will be produced automatically which you can port as you like to corresponding target systems. The example of the development of a car radio shows how the development process is formed by means of this new way.

Engineering Real-Time Systems. An object-oriented methodology using SDL, Prentice-Hall 1993, ISBN 0–13-034448–6, A methodology that helps the user to master the complexity of distributed real-time systems and maintain quality in operation is presented. It supplies complete coverage from ideas to implementation. A realistic example is developed throughout the book. The methodology uses the specification language SDL-92 recommended by the international standardisation body ITU.
F. Beiina, D. Hogrefe and A. Sarma: SDL with Applications from Protocol Specification, Prentice-Hall 1991, ISBN 0–13-785890–6, This book on the specification and description language SDL meets the urgent need for an introduction to the language and, in particular, SDL-88. Features include: A gradual introduction of SDL concepts, complemented by real-life examples; A complete treatment of the language constructs, enabling the reader to understand and write SDL specifications; A chapter devoted to the use of SDL for the specification of OSI protocols and services; Appendices containing complete lexical and syntax rules and a list of all the graphical symbols.
