Zwei Jahre hatte seine Entwicklung gedauert, gesponsert wurde er mit 500.000 Dollar von der US-Army. Dann endlich, im November 1945, konnten John Presper Eckert und John Mauchly „ihren“ ENIAC vorstellen, den ersten Elektronenrechner der Welt.1 Der „Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer“ war zu einem wahren Monstrum geraten, das einen 170 Quadratmeter großem Raum der Moore School an der University of Pennsylvania füllte, rund 30 Tonnen schwer, bestückt mit 17.468 Vakuumröhren.
