Zusammenfassung
Die Welle der Demokratisierung, die Europa in den letzten 25 Jahren überzog, hat im Westen des Kontinents die verbliebenen Autokratien und im Osten die Dominanz des Kommunismus beendet. Die neuen Demokratien in Westeuropa scheinen nun gefestigt und sicher im geeinten Europa integriert zu sein. Die im Osten geben ein vielfältigeres Bild ab. Einige von ihnen sind auf dem Weg, den auch die jungen westlichen Demokratien eingeschlagen hatten, schon weit gelangt, während andere von autoritären Herrschern manipulierte demokratische Formen aufweisen.
