Abstract
The results of EUROPT being a starting point a specific aim of ECARP Area 3 was to extend the scope of the existing design procedures to more relevant industrial 3-D applications operating in inviscid flows with viscous interactions and more complex optimisation strategies including multi objectives. Dealing with more realistic design problems the project aimed to develop and assess automated optimization tools implemented on current computer technology for reduction of drag of relevant civil aircraft configurations operating under real flow conditions. The ultimate objective was two folds: (1) reduce the design time cycle and also (2) improve the final quality of aerodynamic design for civil aircraft with the use of the automated design software.
