Abstract
The outstanding qualities of ATM when compared with preceding technologies are its wide range of supported bitrates, and its potential for efficient integration of voice, data and other signal types. These qualities (once fully developed) make it an ideal backbone technology, with universal application. It will be built into all sorts of communicating devices and be the basis of many networks. Even so, the early application fields will be in three niche markets — wide area corporate backbone networks, corporate campus networks, and public switched broadband. In this chapter we discuss why, and predict how future applications will evolve.
