Summary

A new low-Reynolds number, two-equation turbulence model based on the variables q ≡ √k and ζ ≡ έ/2q is described, this model together with the low-Re k-ε model of Launder & Sharma and the ‘standard’ k-ε model with wall functions are used to compute two backward-facing step flows. The first computation is for a low-Re flow for which experimental data, [5] and DNS data, [6] are available. The second computation, for high Re flow, is based on reference [7]. The results highlight that the low-Re models resolve more of the flow detail than the wall function approach and that the q-ζ model performs slightly better then the low-Re k-ε model. Some savings in computing time for the q-ζ model have been observed due to coarser grids being used in the near-wall regions.
