Summary
This paper reports laser-Doppler measurements of the laminar flow field around a circular cylinder placed in a two-dimensional channel flow. The experimental conditions were adjusted to match numerical investigations which have been performed under the frame of the DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm ”Strömungssimulation mit Hochleistungsrechnern” as the test case 2.2b. A specially designed two-dimensional channel with transparent test section together with a one-component LDA system permitted detailed velocity measurements in the wake behind the cylinder. Measurements of the shedding frequency as a function of the Reynolds number are presented. These results show very good agreement with the corresponding numerical data. The experimental results also include the mean velocity distributions in the wake region. A comparison of measured and predicted data across the wake region further demonstrate the high reliability of the computational results.
