Part of the book series: Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics (NNFM) ((NONUFM,volume 48))

Abstract

In recent years intensive research has been undertaken (and is still continuing) to improve the performance of computer codes for flow computations by employing both more efficient solution algorithms and more powerful computer systems. Concerning the computer aspects, it is nowadays widely accepted that only parallel computers will satisfy the future demands of computational fluid mechanics, because solely parallel processing can provide the necessary scalability in computing power and memory for the increasing requirements in this field. Here, the combined usage of modern numerical techniques and high-performance parallel computers significantly enlarges the practical capabilities of computational techniques for complex fluid mechanical tasks.
