Zusammenfassung

Ein immer wieder überraschend auftretendes Moment in der politischen Ideengeschichte ist der Vorgang, dass Begriffe, die anfangs zur Selbstbezeichnung von Gruppen und ihrer Ziele dienen, später aus diesem Bezug herausgelöst und sodann dazu verwandt werden, auffallende und von ihnen beabsichtigte, mitgetragene oder herbeigeführte Entwicklungen in der Gegenwart nunmehr von außen her zu beschreiben und zu deuten. Wie ich im folgenden zeigen möchte, hat auch die Verwendung der zeitdiagnostischen Kategorien wie ‚säkular‘ und ‚Säkularisierung‘ eine Vorgeschichte sowohl in der Selbstbezeichnung von Gruppen als auch in der Gründung von klein-räumig strukturierten Öffentlichkeiten, in denen der Säkularismus als eine Denk- und Lebenshaltung angestrebt und verwirklicht wurde.
