Demokratie in quantitativen Indizes: Ein mehr- oder eindimensionales Phänomen?

Zusammenfassung

Mit dem Zusammenbruch der staatssozialistischen Regime in Osteuropa Anfang der neunziger Jahre erreichte die „Dritte Demokratisierungswelle“ (Huntington 1991) ihren Höhepunkt. Erstmals kehrte sich das zahlenmäßige Verhältnis zwischen Autokratien und Demokratien zugunsten der demokratischen Systeme um.1 Mit der großflächigen Demokratisierung weltweit ist die Gruppe der Demokratien jedoch nicht nur größer, sondern auch heterogener geworden. Dies stellt die empirische Demokratieforschung vor neue Anforderungen. Zum einen ermöglicht die nunmehr relativ große Fallzahl eine breitere empirische Überprüfung von Theorien, die bisher aufgrund der relativ geringen Fallzahlen nur bedingt überprüfbar waren. Dies zeigt sich in der Vielzahl neuerer quantitativ-empirischer Untersuchungen zu den Entstehungsursachen und Erfolgsbedingungen von Demokratie.2
