Wie man aus Bild 11-1 erkennt, bildet die Synchronmaschine mit der Asynchronmaschine zusammen die Familie der Drehfeldmaschinen. Somit gilt auch für die Synchronmaschine die Drehfeldgleichung (12.1). Man findet die Synchronmaschine zwar auch als Motor, und zwar mit wachsender Tendenz. In erster Linie liegt ihre Bedeutung aber auf dem Gebiet der Generatoren.
