Innovationen sind revolutionierende Neuerungen im Rahmen unternehmerischer Tätigkeit (Bierfelder 1987, S. 9ff.; Stolze 1976, S. 12; Littmann 1975, S.9). Sie können in Form neuer Produkte, neuer (Produktions-) Verfahren oder einer neuen Organisation der Unternehmensaktivitäten auftreten. Für alle Innovationen gilt, daß es sich bei ihnen um bedeutende Neuerungen, Verbesserungen oder Änderungen handeln muß (Geschka 1970, S. 25).
