Zusammenfassung
Übersicht. Seit Jahrzehnten erfolgt die Informationsübermittlung durch modulierte elektromagnetische Wellen über Drahtleitungen, Koaxialkabel, Hohlleiter oder den freien Raum im Frequenzbereich von einigen Hz bis zu einigen GHz (entsprechend einem Wellenlängenbereich von einigen 100 Metern bis in den mm-Bereich). Dabei weiß man, daß die Übertragungsrate (z.B.gemessen in Bit/s bei Digitalmodulation) direkt von der maximal benutzbaren Trägerfrequenz abhängt. Sie steigert sich deshalb beim Übergang zum GHz-Bereich etwa um den Faktor 300000. Diese Erkenntnis trieb die Entwicklung der optischen Nachrichtenübertraqungssvsteme und ihrer Schlüsselkomponenten, die optischen Verbindungsglieder die Lichtwellenleiter, Koppler, Modulationseinrichtungen (u.a.) stark voran. So überdeckt beispielsweise ein Glasfasersystem im Wellenlängenbereich λ = 0,75 ... 1,5 μm einen Frequenzbereich von 2 ...4 · 1014 Hz, besitzt also die Bandbreite B = 2 · 1014 Hz. In einem solchen Band kann eine enorme Informationsmenge übertragen werden, z.B. 2 · 106 (!) Fernsehsignale von je 100 Mbit/s.
