Zusammenfassung
STEP wird seit der Veröffentlichung seiner ersten Teile als International Standard (IS) 1994 in die industrielle Praxis eingeführt. Die Anwendung von STEP betrifft dabei zwei Teilbereiche:

Die Entwicklung von Software nach der STEP-Implementierungsme-thode auf der Basis der STEP-Datenmodelle für den Datenaustausch (Prozessoren) oder für die Datenhaltung (PDM) sowie
-
die industrielle Nutzung von STEP zum Datenaustausch und zur Datenhaltung.
