Abstract
In 1985 a cross-national study of Care Delivery Systems, known as Age Care Research Europe (ACRE) was initiated with support from the European Commission (Illsley, Jamieson 1989). The first ideas for the study were already being discussed in the late 1970’s, and the cross-national activities of the programme took place over a period of 5 years, ending in 1991. It was a collaborative study involving researchers from nine of the European Member States. Margret Dieck was part of the German team, contributing to the policy aspects of the programme. During this time things were changing fast, yet the main focus and hypotheses stated initially never lost their relevance.
