Summary
Pain, dard in Farsi language, is according to the Persian experience poison and antidote. It is something to get rid off and at the same time a conditio sine qua non for maturity in human and Spiritual life. Pain is, besides Love and Death, a topic in Persian poetry and reflects its real experience and Sublimation. Pre-islamic and Islamic Persian religious tradition is built on suffering and sacrifice. So, being in pain is the only way to become a real Schi’it. Poetry is not at all the privilege of the educated ones. All people know hundreds of verses by heart which they quote in every moment of daily life. In mysticism, which is the core of Shia belief, the sufis (this can be anybody on the path to God) experience pain as beauty, as love. Pain to them is the only way to loose oneself and become nothing as is reflected in the word of Rumi: „The mirror is without image.“ The material for this paper was collected from the original poetry, translated by Dr. Shams Anwari, and my fieldwork results during the seventies. The selected quotations are from the l0th to the 20th Century. The transcription follows german pronounciation.
