Summary
In England and Wales where less than 30% of all deaths now occur at home, an old people’s home is something of an anomaly. It is a space in which both living and dying take place in close proximity. In addition, the processes of deterioration and dying often take a slow and unpredictable course in very elderly people. This paper describes the verbal and spatial attempts of residents and staff to maintain a clear-cut separation between the conceptual categories ‘life’ and ‘death’. This material exemplifies one of the various and varying cultural interpretations of the biological process of dying.
