Summary
The Azande have no basically different beliefs on dying and death than other tribal groups. Death is not an eternal separation but only a change from one state of being into another. The deceased remains firmly integrated in the structure of his Clan. He becomes an anchestor whose spirit still guides the living. He is considered a member of the group, he aids in the solution of problems, he participates in joy and sorrow. The place of union with the living is the anchestral shrine. In its vicinity the hunted animals are eviscerated, sacrifices are made and discourses with the spirits are entertained. The traditional healers conduct their therapies at their shrine, the magicians leave their magical pipes there, so that the strength of their anchestors may induce them with necessary power. If someone dies, all relatives and friends come together to participate in the preparation of the funeral. In the very contrast to the mourning the sisters in law of the deceased conduct a ‘mock-funeral’ in keeping with the ‘joking relationship’ they had with him during his life time. With laughing and joking maniok-seedlings are planted, while the mourning people are mocked at and young men are incited to sexually arousal. This vital form of coping with mourning is in sharp contrast with the demographic situation. The Azande are threatened with extinction by reasons not quite understood. The number of population once estimated at 2 million is now reduced to only 600.000, and there is no end in sight to this development.
“The Azande for their part say that when a man dies his soul goes into the earth. Then that soul is a man’s ghost. Azande also say that a man’s ghost is at the sources of streams. However, men’s ghosts do not wander far from their kinsmen. They are in some place quite near. For even if they go far, when the living want to pay the ghosts their respect they will have already come quickly to nearby their shrine. But after a great number of years have passed they fade away; because very many kinsmen have died and the ghosts of them have become very numerous. Some of them disperse far and wide to leave places for others. Nevertheless, when a man has a ceremony in honour of his father’s ghost they gather from distant places to hear what is to be said to them. When the ceremony is finished they flit away again to their places. But some people’s ghosts go around with them to protect them against all sorts of misfortunes.”(1)
